An IPO is an Initial Public Offering or the launch of a stock for a company to be owned and traded publicly.  It is the very first sale of the stock to the public. However, as an individual investor, you won’t be able to invest in the shares at the IPO price (unless you have a very large account size) until the original investors sell their shares on the market. Unless you work for the company or can be part of their Friends & Family offering, marketed opportunities to get involved in an IPO will not likely be profitable for you. The investment bankers like to make sure the profits are only shared by the VIPs.
